I thought I would touch a little on the processed meats today. We have all heard about it, we know some of the dangers, but do you really understand what it is and what it means? Here is a basic overview of what you should know!

The Truth about Processed Meats

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about the dangers of processed meat. More recently, processed meats have been in the spotlight due to findings linking it to cancer and other scary health issues. So what exactly is it and what does it mean?

What is processed meat?

In general, this is any kind of meat that requires more preparation then just a cut or ground. The most common processed meats we encounter are lunch meats, sausage, deli meats, bacon and turkey bacon, pepperoni, salami, etc. Most of these meats are very poor quality to begin with, then pumped full of chemicals and preservatives and manipulated to look the way buyers want them to. Think hot dogs. You probably wouldn’t eat them if you had seen it as a pile of waste and scraps on the floor but wrapped up and preserved in the right shape and color they look like the perfect addition to you backyard BBQ!

Why is it bad?

Frequent consumption of processed meats have been linked to a whole list of health issues. This includes, obesity, heart disease, and cancer. Here’s the deal the harmful nature of processed meats are the chemicals added and not necessarily the meat itself. Check out the ingredient list on that package of turkey meat. I bet you attempt reading 3 ingredients and put it back realizing you can’t even pronounce them, let alone understand what they are. Neither can your body. Our bodies are very efficient mechanisms that do an amazing job of filtering the crap we put in them. Why make this harder on yourself? Everyone should be a little more aware of what goes in their body and your body will thank you.

What can you do?

So far no studies have produced dangers in fresh meat. The fresher the better, but buying more common cuts of meat that require less processing during production is the way to go. Can’t live without your morning breakfast sausage? Try picking up low fat ground turkey and making it yourself! It’s incredibly easy and leaves you with a healthy homemade version of your favorite breakfast food!

It’s easy to let the news and that-one-friends Facebook posts scare you away from a lot of different foods. Everything seems to be bad for you and the grocery store feels more like navigating a mine field of good and bad. The best thing you can do for yourself is be mindful of your choices and aware of what you’re putting in your body. If at all possible, chose whole ingredients and leave the processed foods for special occasions and the occasional cheat meal. Eating shouldn’t be scary, it should be enjoyed by you and the mouths you’re feeding. Making smart decision will keep you, your family, and your waistline happy!
